 The patella, commonly known as the kneecap, is a small, flat, triangular bone located in front of the knee joint. It plays a crucial role in protecting the knee and assisting in the extension of the leg. The patella has a base, apex, and posterior and anterior surfaces. It articulates with the femur to form the patellofemoral joint. Ligaments and tendons, including the patellar ligament, connect the patella to the tibia, facilitating leg extension.
